Tiger To Take On The World
10 October 2011
Tony 'Tiger' Wood is one of those select few bowlers who finds that bowls takes him further than his local club, Clayton, each weekend.
In August this year Tony won his way through the Victorian and then National qualifying at Warilla Bowls Club to score a berth at the 2012 World Indoor Singles Championships in the UK in January 2012.
Tony was stoked with his efforts, being the only Australian to make it through the qualification event but not before the nerve-wracking final was over. "I was fairly nervous going into the tie-break." he said "Matty [Ellul] was on fire in the second set, but I've played plenty of tie-breakers before and know that it is a completely different game and just hoped that I would get lucky in it."
Tony used Edge Plus to qualify, just as he does each week when he fronts up for Clayton in the Victorian Premier League. "I felt that the my bowls gave me an advantage on the carpet at Warilla because I was able to get a little bit more turn on a weighted shot where as a lot of other types of bowls would just hang out. They had a very consistent line on the draw which helps a fair bit."
The World Indoor is one of the most competitive bowls events on the planet but Tony isn't fazed. He's looking forward to the experience "I get a chance to go overseas for the first time and get the chance to play against some (hopefully more then one) of the best bowlers in the world and learn some things off them."
You'll be able to follow Tony's progress at the World Indoor Championships in January on the World Bowls Tour website http://www.worldbowlstour.com/home. We'll probably mention it on the Edge site too. Or better still on our Facebook page. Have you joined us on Facebook yet? Now's a good time....
